Cooperative Studies with Integrated Training Programme (KIA)

In this course of studies, you may choose between a five-year engineering programme to reach the Dipl.-Ing. (FH) degree (traditional German engineering degree) or a four-year bachelor's programme, both with integrated vocational training programme.
New students begin each fall on September 1st with a four-week practical vocational training in "their company", and begin their first semester full-time at the University of Applied Sciences starting October 1st. After this, thre are four "part-time semesters" in a two-week rotation schedule.  Students are in Zittau for two weeks for academic study, and two weeks in their company for practical training.

During the in-company practical phases of the part-time semesters and the semester breaks, the vocational training takes place in the companies supervising their training process, finishing with the International Chamber of Commerce (IHK) final examination.

Starting in the 6th semester, students begin their full-time studies in their chosen course of study (Mechanical Engineering or Energy and Environmental Technology) until they graduate.

Admissions requirements are the same as for a basic courses of study:

  • general qualification for university entrance,
  • a relevant, subject-specific qualification for university entrance, or
  • advanced technical college entrance qualifications.

All students enroll for the KIA-Mechanical Engineering course. During the main period of study (Hauptstudium) students may choose between the same specializations as in the standard Mechanical Engineering "Diplom" studies.

Ein Wechsel in den Diplom-Studiengang Energie- und Umwelttechnik ist auf Grund des einheitlichen Grundstudiums ab dem 6. Semester ohne weitere Auflagen möglich.

Because the core courses are identical, it is possible and simple to switch to the "Diplom" course for Energy and Environmental Technology starting with the 6th semester if so desired.
