FrameUp

As part of the Sustainable Crossborder Solutions Hackathon, the team developed Frame Up —a lightweight, modular metal framing system that seamlessly integrates solar panels into historic rooftops without compromising their structural integrity or visual character. Each framework is individually tailored to the geometry and architectural features of the respective roof.

Frame Up goes beyond mere functionality: The system allows for aesthetic customization—for example, by replicating traditional tile patterns in contrasting colors or by matching the color to existing roof surfaces. Deliberate color contrasts are also possible to make roofs stand out as striking urban accents—especially in cross-border regions such as the German-Polish-Czech tri-border area.

To illustrate this, initial 3D models and visualizations were created, showing how renewable energy can be integrated with architectural heritage. The project embodies the concept of “Solar Equity” —the principle that residents of historic downtown areas can also actively participate in the energy transition and become a visible part of a sustainable urban future.
