Radon at workplaces

The new German Radiation Protection Act (StrlSchG) contains binding regulations on radon protection for the first time in Sections 121 to 132; most of these regulations come into force on December 31, 2018. A new feature is a reference value for radon in recreation rooms and workplaces of 300 Bq/m3.

Before the new StrlSchG came into force, the radon concentration was and is (until 31.12.2018) only monitored at workplaces in accordance with the Radiation Protection Ordinance, and only from selected workplaces (e.g. dust extraction plants, waterworks). In accordance with the new StrlSchG (§ 127 StrlSchG), the obligation to measure the radon-222 activity concentration is extended to all workplaces located in the ground floor or basement of areas yet to be designated.

The Radiation Technology Laboratory is able to measure radon and thoron concentrations in indoor air using active devices; passive dosimeters can also be provided on request.
